Which Way? Where does the Republican Party go from here?

Right now, I have become very disheartened on where the Republican party is headed and how we have abandoned the very principles that have garnered successful victories and gained the respect of the voters in the past.   I was pondering if I should share my views with the readers of this blog, but the thoughts came to a boil this afternoon while I was at work.  For a second, it seemed like I was about to throw something at the computer as I was reading an e-mail from a friend who shares both conservative and libertarian views.  My friend mentioned that she felt many of the Republicans in Congress have gradually began to embrace liberal views, instead of standing up for what is right and adhering to the Constitution.   I agreed with my friend’s points and after reading an article highlighting the current losses by the GOP in Congressional races.  We need to do something quickly to revive the Republican party.

First, we are a party that needs to return to the principles of limited government, liberty and freedom, and economic conservatism.   Ronald Reagan once said, “Government is not the solution to our problem, it is the problem.”  Currently, we have some members of Congress and our state/local legislatures who act more like Democrats by expanding the size of government through creating new (and often unnecessary) programs and spending taxpayers’ money like Paris Hilton in Gucci on crazy projects (such as The Bridge to Nowhere).    We should not forget that our party has strived to threaten our personal liberties through enacting a National ID (REAL ID) law that would mandate federal government issued IDs for everyone.   For those who are U.S. Citizens, this is an assault on our liberties as Americans and it is an insult, punishing us for the crimes of those who cross our borders illegally.

We need to recruit better and stronger candidates who will stand up for strong conservative values.   The candidate should adhere to the Constitution and stand up for the protection of life.  If we do this, then we will see an improvement in the party.

Now, let’s move on to the next point and that is the need to motivate/stimulate the grassroots base.  Once the party begins to recruit stronger candidates, we will get the grassroots base excited again.   We need to address the issues affecting the voters, and this will be a great exchange of ideas that will continue to energize the base.   In the case of the Chairman’s race in Virginia, there has only been one candidate who has addressed what we need to do to motivate the grassroots base.  Jeff Frederick is a strong choice due to his strong conservative views and his ideas that once enacted will help our party gain in strength.  John Hager has not made any strides on how he can energize the base or how he would recruit volunteers to assist with campaigns.  This is the most crucial step in party development and growth in the future.

Lastly, I have always been proud to be a Republican.  Although it seems like I am being pessimistic to a degree, I am only trying to point out that we need to return to our core values and become a party that welcomes new, innovative ideas.

The religious/social conservative faction is killing the GOP. Get back to the basics you have outlined and stop pandering to the extreme right and the Republican Party will be back on track.

Wow, Hoobie! You have to embrace the religious/social conservatives, because they are the grassroots base.

I personally hope the GOP loses the White House, and even loses more seats in the House and Senate.

Then perhaps those war-mongering socialist, aka Republicans, would finally wake up and return back to the Old Right.

Brian,

I agree we need to return to the basic conservative principles by advocating for limited government and personally, keeping the government out of my life.

We are going to lose and continue to lose if we do not return to these principles.
