NRO’s Mark Krikorian Addresses Immigration

This is a pretty interesting post on March 9th from National Review Online’s Mark Krikorian about news on current immigration policy.   I especially like how Krikorian addresses how the U.N. is criticizing how the U.S. treats illegal immigrants.  Hmm, since when does the U.N.’s opinion matters?  The U.N. always appears like it wants to be involved in everyone’s affairs (kinda like a nosy neighbor who needs to know the daily gossip of the day), and the U.N. is not living up to its designed purpose.   The report, which was headed up by Chief Investigator and Notre Dame Professor Jorge Bustamante is sympathetic to amnesty for illegal immigrants.  No surprise!  This sounds like a biased report to me considering that they want this matter addressed immediately.

You know what, I want it addressed immediately too.  How about actually enforcing the laws instead of granting amnesty for illegal immigrants?  How about penalizing businesses who knowingly hire illegal immigrants?  Thank goodness for Prince William County actually enforcing the law and doing what Congress should be addressing.  Illegal immigration has had negative effects all over the United States, particularly Fairfax County.   We are noticing that essential services are being overburdened by the influx of illegal immigrants and many legal residents have to wait a long time to obtain these services.  Property values are declining and public safety is being threatened by the increase in crimes committed.    When will it be enough?

It is time for our country to wake up and address this issue.  What will have to take place before this issue is confronted?

Another perspective on the effects of local decisions to ban illegals can be found at:

I don’t believe this was an op-ed piece, but rather just an article suggesting that such local bans might have unintended consequences.

Jack,

Thanks for the NYT article. It gave a completely different perspective on communities banning illegal immigrants. While I highlighted the conservative opinion of cracking down, the NYT article did point out the negative economic effects of expediting the ICE enforcement/deportation processes.

There are always pros and cons of the immigration issue. While I find myself touting the conservative views, I find that it is good to read other sources. Naturally, I despise the New York Times, because they are so biased. After reading this article, I might have to take a second glance.

I don’t know that one story redeems the newspaper, but I am glad you found the article informative.

I agree with you that employers are a big piece of the problem. I am sure that documentation is a difficult task for many employers and illegal workers occasionally slip through. It is the employer that intentionally hires undocumented workers for the purpose of unfairly competing against fellow employers that is the problem.

That is a double whammy in that those illegals work “off the books” and no payroll taxes are paid on their wages. The fair employers cannot compete against such scoundrels and the unrealistic labor cost advantage they enjoy. The result is that many fair employers are forced out of business and their legal employees are laid off. Those legal employees often need to rely upon unemployment wages for a while, a benefit paid for by payroll taxes. That model is simply a long, slow death spiral for legal domestic employers and their legal employees.

I’m not sure a big wall fixes that problem. Going after the unscrupulous employers might be a start. But part and parcel of the solution may lie with you and me and the rest of the population that is addicted to the cheapest price. But I guess that’s another topic, ain’t it?

Jack
